Over 6 Million Eggs Recalled Across Multiple States

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a significant recall affecting over six million eggs due to potential salmonella contamination. This recall involves eggs produced by Black Sheep Egg Company, based in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, and sold under various brand names across multiple states.
Details of the Egg Recall
The recall focuses on two specific packaging types from the Black Sheep Egg Company. These include:
- Free Range Large Grade A Brown Eggs:
- 12-count carton with UPC 860010568507
- 18-count carton with UPC 860010568538
- Grade AA Large Pasture-Raised Eggs:
- Produced by Kenz Henz of Santa Fe, Texas, with best by dates between October 11-14 and October 16-17, bearing UPC 86949400030.
Distribution and Possible Exposure
The eggs were sold in several states, including Texas, California, Indiana, Arkansas, and Missouri. The FDA suspects that the contaminated products may have been distributed to additional states as well.
Following the discovery of salmonella in environmental samples taken from the processing facility, the recall was initiated. Seven strains of salmonella were identified, prompting the ongoing investigation into further products that may need to be recalled.
Health Risks Associated with Salmonella
While no illnesses have been reported as of October 17, the risks posed by salmonella are significant. This bacteria can lead to severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Diarrhea (may be bloody)
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
Symptoms typically appear within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food.
Consumer Safety Recommendations
Consumers who may have purchased the recalled eggs are advised to immediately dispose of them. The FDA recommends that individuals do not eat, sell, or serve the recalled products.
Additionally, proper hygiene practices should be followed during the handling of raw eggs. This includes:
- Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water
- Cleaning utensils and surfaces with hot, soapy water
As the situation develops, consumers are urged to stay informed about any updates regarding the recall and potential additional products that may be affected.
