Norovirus Outbreak: Cruise Ship Docks in Florida with Sick Passengers

A recent norovirus outbreak has disrupted the voyage of the Caribbean Princess cruise ship, docking in Florida with a significant number of ill passengers. The ship arrived at Port Canaveral on May 11, 2023, after a cruise that began in Fort Lauderdale on April 28.

Details of the Outbreak

During the nearly two-week journey, over 110 individuals fell ill due to the highly contagious norovirus. Among the 3,116 guests on board, 102 passengers and 13 crew members reported symptoms. The Princess Cruises line indicated that local Bahamian officials denied the ship’s request to dock at Nassau, prioritizing community health during an upcoming local election.

Response Actions by Princess Cruises

In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Princess Cruises implemented several measures to manage the outbreak. These included:

  • Enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols.
  • Collection of stool samples for testing from those affected.
  • Isolation of sick passengers and crew members.
  • Consultation with the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on sanitation practices.

Understanding Norovirus

The CDC emphasizes that norovirus is a prevalent cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks on cruise ships. It spreads easily through:

  • Direct contact with infected individuals.
  • Consumption of contaminated food or water.
  • Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth.

Individuals can remain contagious for weeks even after symptoms subside. Common symptoms of norovirus infection include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain, typically appearing 12 to 48 hours after exposure.

Protection Measures for Passengers

To reduce the risk of contracting norovirus while on a cruise, passengers are advised to:

  • Wash hands frequently.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Rest adequately.
  • Report any illness to the ship’s medical center promptly.
  • Avoid areas where sick passengers have been and alert cruise staff immediately.

As this outbreak unfolds, the focus remains on controlling the spread and ensuring the health and safety of all passengers and crew members aboard the Caribbean Princess.
