2027 Rivian R2 Outperforms Porsche Macan Turbo EV at Half the Price

The 2027 Rivian R2 lineup is set to make waves in the electric vehicle market, offering performance that outshines the Porsche Macan Turbo EV at a fraction of the cost. Comprising two all-wheel-drive models, the range includes a Performance version boasting 656 horsepower, significantly surpassing the Macan Turbo EV’s 630 horsepower.
Rivian R2 Launch Details
The Rivian R2 Performance model will launch this spring with a starting price of $59,485, while the Premium variant will follow later in the year, commencing at $55,485. Rivian is also planning a rear-wheel-drive version for 2028, which will have two battery options and prices ranging from $46,495 to $49,985.
Specifications and Performance
- Performance Model: 656 hp, 609 lb-ft of torque
- 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds
- 88-kWh battery with an estimated range of 330 miles
- Charging: 10-80% in approximately 29 minutes
The Premium model features a slightly lower output of 450 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds, alongside similar battery and range capabilities.
Interior and Features
The R2 features a modern, minimalist interior inspired by Rivian’s larger models. Notable features include:
- Heated and ventilated front seats with 12-way power adjustments
- 975-watt sound system
- Roll-down rear window
- Two gloveboxes for storage
Furthermore, the back seat offers ample head and legroom, making it spacious enough for most users. The R2 also has a cargo capacity of 29 cubic feet, expandable to 70 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.
Off-Road Capabilities
While primarily designed as an electric SUV, the R2 maintains respectable off-road capabilities:

- Towing capacity: 4,400 pounds
Autonomous Features
The R2 will also feature an advanced autonomous driving platform, powered by an in-house developed AI chip. Initially, it will offer SAE Level 2 capabilities, allowing hands-free driving with the requirement to remain attentive.
The Autonomy+ feature will be available for free for the first 60 days, after which it will cost $49.99 per month or a one-time fee of $2,500.
Future Expansion of the R2 Lineup
The 2028 Rivian R2 will introduce a Standard model featuring a single motor offering 350 horsepower, expected to have a range of 345 miles for the Long Range version and 275 miles for the smaller battery variant, priced at $46,495.
With the Rivian R2 lineup, the brand significantly raises the stakes in the electric vehicle sector, targeting a balance of affordability and performance that could potentially challenge established competitors, such as the Tesla Model Y.
