John F. Kirby Named Director of UChicago Institute of Politics

John F. Kirby has been appointed as the new director of the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics, effective November 15, 2023. A retired rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, Kirby brings extensive experience from his tenure supporting six presidential administrations.
Kirby’s Background and Experience
Kirby is well-known in the media and has a robust background in military and diplomatic communications. Most recently, he served as the White House National Security Communications Advisor from 2022 to 2025. Prior to this role, he was the chief spokesman for the Secretary of Defense and managed public affairs for the U.S. State Department.

Commitment to Civic Engagement
In a message to the University of Chicago community, President Paul Alivisatos and Provost Katherine Baicker highlighted Kirby’s distinctive understanding of civic engagement. They emphasized his expertise in diplomacy and policy as essential to his new role.
Kirby expressed enthusiasm about joining the Institute of Politics. He stated, “There’s no more critical time for that work than right now,” emphasizing his dedication to fostering public service among students.
The Institute of Politics
The Institute of Politics was founded in 2013 and aims to enhance civic engagement and civil discourse. It provides a platform for UChicago students to explore public service careers and engage in discussions on significant issues.
Successor to Heidi Heitkamp
Kirby takes over from Heidi Heitkamp, the former U.S. senator from North Dakota, who directed the Institute from 2023 to 2025. Kirby acknowledged the challenge of succeeding Heitkamp, stating, “She took the IOP to a whole new level.”

David Axelrod, the founding director of the Institute and chair of its board of advisors, welcomed Kirby. He praised Kirby as a thoughtful and proven leader whose dedication aligns with the Institute’s mission.
