Lafayette Man Charged with Participating in Hamas-Led Attack on Israel

A man from Lafayette has been charged with involvement in the Hamas-led attacks on Israel in October 2023. Federal prosecutors allege that Mahmoud Amin Ya’qub al-Muhtadi participated in these attacks, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,200 Israelis. He reportedly traveled to the U.S. on an illegal visa.

Charges and Allegations Against Mahmoud al-Muhtadi

The criminal complaint against al-Muhtadi outlines several serious charges, including:

  • Supporting a terrorist organization
  • Visa fraud

Documents indicate that al-Muhtadi, who is affiliated with another Gaza-based paramilitary group, learned of the Hamas invasion and organized armed fighters to assist in the attack. Allegations state that he provided false information regarding his past connections to paramilitary organizations on his visa application.

Background of al-Muhtadi

Al-Muhtadi has been identified as a senior member of the military wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), a group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. since at least 2019. Court documents reveal that he was responsible for training younger militants.

On October 7, 2023, investigators noted that al-Muhtadi was actively communicating with others about the Hamas attack. His phone’s location data showed he was near Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where 64 lives were lost during the assault.

Life in the United States

Al-Muhtadi, originally from Gaza, had been living in Lafayette since at least May 2025, working at a local restaurant after moving from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He first entered the United States in September 2024.

Court Proceedings

Al-Muhtadi made an appearance in federal court in Lafayette on Friday. However, the hearing faced delays due to the absence of an interpreter. His attorney, Lester Gauthier, stated that the accused had been living and working in Lafayette but did not disclose further details.

Reaction from Officials

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrell expressed outrage at the events of October 7. In her statement, she emphasized the gravity of the alleged actions and advocated for the full prosecution of al-Muhtadi. She mentioned that if the death penalty is an option, it should be considered, and reaffirmed her prayers for the victims of the attacks.
