Obama Backs Abigail Spanberger in Virginia Governor Race

Former President Barack Obama has officially endorsed Abigail Spanberger in the race for Virginia governor. He is featured in two digital advertisements promoting her campaign. In these ads, Obama emphasizes the significance of the upcoming elections in Virginia, stating, “Every vote counts.”

Obama’s Support for Spanberger

Virginia is one of two states, alongside New Jersey, conducting gubernatorial elections this year. These races serve as critical indicators of voter sentiment ahead of the 2024 election and the 2026 midterms. Currently, Spanberger faces Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.

Public Polling and Historical Context

Spanberger has consistently outperformed Earle-Sears in public polling while outspending her in advertising efforts. Historically, the party controlling the White House has faced challenges in off-year elections, losing 11 out of the last 12 contests. The only exception occurred in 2013 when Democrat Terry McAuliffe won during Obama’s second term.

  • Obama won Virginia in 2008 by 6 points and in 2012 by 4 points.
  • Republican Glenn Youngkin won the 2021 gubernatorial race by 2 points.

Key Election Issues

In the ads, Obama addresses pressing issues such as the economy and abortion rights. He warns that “Republican policies are raising costs on working families,” advocating for Spanberger’s vision of an economy that supports all Virginians, not just the wealthy.

Mobilizing Voters

Turnout in off-year elections can be challenging. Obama aims to remind voters of the election’s stakes, reinforcing the importance of electing the right governor. “We know Republicans will keep attacking abortion rights and the rights of women. That’s why having the right governor matters,” Obama states in one ad.

Campaign Dynamics

Other prominent Democrats are also actively supporting Spanberger’s campaign. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will join her in Virginia next week. Additionally, Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky recently visited Virginia to bolster her efforts.

As the election approaches, both Spanberger and Earle-Sears are poised to shape Virginia’s political landscape significantly. With Democratic engagement increasing, the outcome of this race will have lasting implications for future elections.
