Global Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference is highlighting global perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI) across diverse regions. A recent Pew Research Center analysis surveyed 28,333 adults across 25 countries, including areas in the Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa, North America, and sub-Saharan Africa. The study, conducted from January 8 to April 26, 2025, assessed public awareness and sentiments regarding AI’s integration into daily life.

Awareness and Sentiment Towards AI

The research indicates that a significant portion of the respondents—34%—have heard a lot about AI, while 47% have heard a little. Notably, 14% reported having no awareness of the technology. The findings reveal a prevailing concern about AI’s impact, with a median of 34% expressing more concern than excitement about its proliferation. A further 42% feel equally concerned and excited, while only 16% are more excited than concerned.

Regional Variations in Concerns

  • Countries like the United States, Italy, Australia, Brazil, and Greece shown the highest levels of concern.
  • Only 16% of South Koreans indicated significant concern about AI.
  • Generally, excitement does not exceed 30% in any surveyed country.

Demographics and Awareness

Awareness of AI varies significantly by country income levels. In wealthier nations such as Japan, Germany, France, and the United States, about 50% of adults have a strong awareness of AI. Conversely, lower percentages were noted in less wealthy countries like India (14%) and Kenya (12%).

Trust in Regulation of AI

The survey also evaluated public trust in various entities to regulate AI. Most participants trust their national governments, with notable trust levels in these countries:

  • India: 89%
  • Indonesia: 74%
  • Israel: 72%
  • Greece: 22%

In the U.S., opinion is almost evenly split on trust in government regulation (44% trust vs. 47% distrust). Trust in the European Union (EU) as a regulatory body is stronger, with a median trust level of 53% across participating nations, compared to 37% for the U.S. and 27% for China.

Demographic Insights on AI Perception

Demographics show stark differences in AI awareness and enthusiasm:

  • Young adults (under 35) are significantly more aware of AI compared to those 50 and older.
  • Men generally report higher awareness levels than women, while women express more concerns about AI’s growth.
  • Education correlates with perception; those with higher education are more likely to feel excited about AI.
  • Internet usage trends also influence perceptions, with near-constant internet users showing greater excitement about AI.

These findings reflect a complex landscape of awareness, trust, and sentiment towards artificial intelligence globally, highlighting the varied perceptions based on regional, demographic, and socio-economic factors.
