Firefighting crews are working diligently to contain the blaze, which has already led to the destruction of at least six businesses located along Maple Avenue between Winans and Conklin avenues.

The intense fire caused injuries to two firefighters, although their injuries were classified as minor. The Hillside Mayor, Dahlia Verteese, confirmed the fire’s origin was traced back to the auto body shop. Eyewitness accounts describe a series of explosions, initially mistaken for car backfires, as gas tanks inside the shop ignited, creating toxic smoke that filled the area.
Firefighters’ Challenges
Fire Chief Rashawn Carey emphasized the challenges faced by firefighters, which were compounded by the presence of multiple flammable chemicals in the shop. He explained that the fire was fueled by a ruptured gas line, causing the situation to escalate rapidly. The fire was declared a sixth-alarm incident, requiring assistance from multiple surrounding communities.
Health Precautions
Officials are particularly concerned about the smoke and fumes resulting from the fire. Residents, especially those with pulmonary conditions, are advised to remain indoors for their safety, with expectations that air quality issues may persist into the following day.
