Pulisic’s Hamstring Injury Raises Concerns Amid USMNT Weather Risks, Says Pochettino

U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed concerns over player safety following Christian Pulisic’s hamstring injury. Pulisic exited the match against Australia early due to discomfort and was not the only player affected by the abrupt change in climate between matches.

Pochettino on Climate Risks

Pochettino referred to the drastic shift in temperatures as a “massive risk” for his players. The team transitioned from a warm climate in Austin, Texas, to the cooler conditions of Denver, Colorado, where temperatures dipped significantly.

Injury Reports

  • Pulisic: Left the field during the first half after two tackles.
  • Malik Tillman: Did not participate due to hamstring issues likened to cramping.

In Austin, where the USMNT played Ecuador, temperatures soared to a high of 92°F. In contrast, the Denver area recorded a high of only 57°F and a low of 43°F at the start of the week, presenting a significant challenge for the players.

Match Overview

Pulisic appeared to struggle after a tackle by Australian defender Jason Geria in the 15th minute. Despite initial discomfort, he continued to play until the 26th minute when he was tackled again, leading to his substitution. After Pulisic left the field, Pochettino and assistant coach Jesús Pérez looked on, concerned for their star player.

Despite suffering an injury, Pulisic showed his support for his teammates as he celebrated Haji Wright’s goal from the sideline. Cristian Roldan, who assisted both of Wright’s goals, emphasized the importance of Pulisic’s recovery process, noting how pivotal he has been for the team and his club, AC Milan.

Upcoming Challenges

As Pulisic prepares to return to AC Milan, the club’s match against Fiorentina looms. His participation is uncertain as he begins his recovery. Pochettino’s remarks highlight the need for careful management of player health, especially given the potential dangers of extreme weather changes.

The USMNT’s next steps will include assessing Pulisic’s condition and preparing for future matches with optimal player safety in mind.
