Ontario Premier Doug Ford Threatens Alleged Shoplifter with ‘Beating’

Ontario Premier Doug Ford recently stirred controversy by claiming he threatened an alleged shoplifter with severe physical repercussions. This incident occurred earlier this summer when Ford, acting on impulse, decided to pursue a suspected thief outside a Home Depot in Etobicoke.

Incident Details

The event unfolded in July when Premier Ford left his home before his Ontario Provincial Police security detail arrived. His journey to Home Depot was intended for purchasing plants for his cottage in Muskoka, coinciding with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s upcoming stay.

In the store’s parking lot, Ford witnessed a man exiting with a bag, pursued by store security and the manager. Noting that the store personnel were hesitant to chase the alleged thief, Ford took matters into his own hands.

Chasing the Alleged Thief

Ford described the adrenaline rush as he decided not to wait. He stated, “I’m in my car, so I said, ‘Screw this, I’m going after this guy.’” Catching up to the suspect, Ford demanded, “Buddy, what’s in your bag?”

The man initially insisted there was nothing inside, leading Ford to respond with a threat. He stated, “I’m going to kick your ass all over the parking lot, show me what’s in your bag.” Eventually, the man revealed a saw blade, which the store manager claimed had been stolen.

Aftermath and Reactions

In his anger, Ford ordered the suspect to return the stolen items, asserting that if he encountered him again, he would face serious consequences. “He’s going to get a beating like he’s never got before,” the Premier emphasized.

Criticism of Ford’s Actions

The incident garnered criticism from various politicians. Ontario Liberal MPP John Fraser condemned Ford’s behavior as irresponsible. He cautioned that pursuing a potential shoplifter could pose significant risks, noting, “They could have a knife, it could be a dangerous situation.”

Fraser urged Ford to heed the advice of law enforcement, highlighting that the police are there not only for the protection of the Premier but also for the broader safety of Ontarians. The Ontario NDP echoed these sentiments, labeling Ford’s aggressive remarks as lacking substance.

As the debate surrounding this incident continues, it raises important questions about the responsibilities of public officials in maintaining safety and order.
