Ben Stiller Admits Feeling of ‘Failure’ During Christine Taylor Separation

Ben Stiller recently shared his feelings of inadequacy following his separation from actress Christine Taylor. In his upcoming documentary, “Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost,” he reflects on his marriage and compares it to his parents’ long-lasting partnership.

Marriage and Separation

Ben Stiller, known for films like “Zoolander” and “Tropic Thunder,” married Christine Taylor in 2000. After 17 years together, they announced their separation in May 2017. Looking back at this period, Stiller expressed feelings of failure, stating, “When we separated, my feeling was like ‘Oh, I’m failing at this.’” He contrasted his relationship with Taylor to the 50-plus year marriage of his parents, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara.

Lessons from Family

In the documentary, Stiller explores how his parents’ relationship influenced his own. The couple, who performed as the comedy duo Stiller and Meara, made over 30 appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Stiller reflected on the pressure of living up to such a standard. He also recounted how he initially feared that the dynamics of working together could strain his relationship with Taylor.

  • Stiller and Taylor first met while filming “Heat Vision and Jack.”
  • They starred together in “Zoolander” and “Dodgeball.”

Reunion During COVID-19

Stiller and Taylor’s separation lasted approximately three to four years, during which they maintained contact. They eventually moved into the same house during the COVID-19 pandemic, sharing space with their two children, Ella and Quinlin. Stiller expressed gratitude for this time together, noting it helped them reconnect.

“It was almost a year of living in the same house before we were actually together,” he shared.

Personal Growth and Understanding

During a March 2023 appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Taylor remarked that their separation allowed them to discover their individual identities. She explained that both grew in different directions, necessitating time apart to reassess their relationship.

“Ben and I both started to grow in different directions,” she stated. “When we made the decision to separate, it was not something we wanted to talk publicly about or took lightly.”

Documentary Release

The documentary “Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost” is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on October 24. It offers insights into Stiller’s artistic journey and personal revelations, adding depth to his understanding of relationships.
