Browns’ Shedeur Sanders Supports Dillon Gabriel Against Steelers

In a significant update for the Cleveland Browns, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders will serve as the backup to Dillon Gabriel for the upcoming divisional match against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The announcement came from head coach Kevin Stefanski on Friday.

Quarterback Situation for the Browns

Sanders, a fifth-round draft pick, has seen a shift in his role after the Browns traded veteran quarterback Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals earlier in the week. Initially, there was uncertainty regarding whether Sanders or practice squad player Bailey Zappe would back up Gabriel, a third-round pick.

Sanders’ Journey to Backup

Having started as Cleveland’s No. 4 quarterback, Sanders has spent the first five games of the season as the team’s emergency quarterback. He was inactive on game days while sharing scout-team reps with Gabriel and Zappe during practices.

  • Shedeur Sanders: 144th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft
  • Dillon Gabriel: Starter and third-round pick
  • Joe Flacco: Former starter, traded to Cincinnati
  • Bailey Zappe: Practice squad quarterback

Coach Stefanski emphasized the importance of decision-making for young quarterbacks, stating, “I want to make sure when it comes to young football players, particularly at the quarterback position, that you are intentional about your decision-making.”

Preparation for Game Day

As he prepares for his new role, Sanders expressed optimism, noting, “I see a light at the end of the tunnel.” He aims to ensure that Gabriel is well-prepared for the game, highlighting his commitment to the team.

“We’re going to make sure we do everything we can to make sure Dillon’s ready for the game,” Sanders added. “I’m overly confident within myself.”

This week has been pivotal for the Browns as they enhance their quarterback strategy ahead of their crucial matchup against the Steelers. The team looks to build on their performance and maintain readiness in the face of changing roles within the roster.
