Ruth DeWitt, the director of community relations for Explore Lawrence, expressed excitement upon learning of Algeria’s arrival. “We prepared to ensure they felt welcome,” she stated. The town, with a population of approximately 100,000, has put forth efforts to create a hospitable environment for the team.
Community Engagement and Soccer Classes
Prior to Algeria’s arrival, Lawrence hosted ‘Soccer 101’ classes. These sessions educated locals about football rules while also sharing knowledge about Algerian culture and fan traditions.

Algerian communities located 40 miles away in Missouri are also participating in the festivities. Many fans travel daily to Lawrence to see their heroes play. DeWitt has even welcomed Wassini Souarit, an Algeria supporter from Minneapolis, into her home during the tournament.
“Lawrence has a spirit of hospitality,” she added. “Despite the challenges faced by Algerian travelers, we’ve adopted them as our home team.” DeWitt highlighted a unique atmosphere of support for both the USA and Algeria.
