Details of the 2026 SJHL Draft
This year’s draft will be the 11th in the league’s history. It consists of two rounds dedicated to selections of players born in 2011, followed by six rounds for those born in 2010. All participants must meet specific criteria:
- Must be residents of Saskatchewan
- Must be previously undrafted
- Cannot be among the auto-protected players from their respective SJHL centre
Coach Insights
SJHL Commissioner Kyle McIntyre emphasized the importance of the draft for local development. “The SJHL draft is an integral part of keeping the ‘S’ in the SJHL,” he stated. He highlighted the “stay here, play here” initiative aimed at providing more opportunities for Saskatchewan youth. This program allows families and friends to support players as they grow and develop in their home province.
New Regulations for Auto-Protected Players
For this year, new regulations have been introduced. The SJHL has limited the number of auto-protected players to two for each birth year. However, up to three players may be protected if a team chooses to forego a first-round U15 draft pick. Additionally, the rules have expanded to consider players living just outside the SJHL community.
Players living on acreages or farms within the trading area can be auto-protected if they fulfill residency and hockey registration criteria, including:
- Registered in the community’s school for most of their education
- Involved in the local minor hockey system for the majority of their experience
Teams must submit their protected players by May 26. Any players not covered by these protections are available for selection in the upcoming draft.
A Saskatchewan League for Saskatchewan Kids
McIntyre reiterated the core mission of the SJHL, stating, “The SJHL is a Saskatchewan league for Saskatchewan kids inside the province of Saskatchewan.” This sentiment reflects the league’s commitment to fostering local talent and supporting community engagement.
