Alex Eala Aims for Wimbledon Seeding After Birmingham Victory

Following her recent triumph at the WTA 125 Birmingham Open, Filipino tennis star Alexandra “Alex” Eala is gearing up for the HSBC Championships. This prestigious event will take place in London, England, from June 8 to June 14.

Upcoming Match Aspirations

Eala seeks a rematch with Iva Jovic, an opponent she previously faced in the first round of the French Open. That match, held on May 26, ended in Eala’s defeat, with scores of 4-6, 2-6. Both players, currently ranked 33rd and 19th in the world, are favored to win their opening matches in the Round of 32.

Match Details

  • Eala’s first match will be against Shuai Zhang, who is ranked 64th globally.
  • Jovic will compete against Antonia Ruzic, currently ranked 58th.

As Eala prepares for her match against Zhang, she aims to extend her winning streak to six matches. Her recent victory in Birmingham marked her first professional title on grass courts, overcoming Czech player Nikola Bartunkova in the final with a score of 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

Her Birmingham Success

Eala expressed her gratitude for her achievement, stating, “I’m so honored to be lifting this trophy today. But lifting this trophy does not mean I will be among the greats yet.” Her determination to continue working hard highlights her ambition within the sport.

The victory also yielded a significant financial reward for Eala, as she earned $33,650 (approximately P2 million). Furthermore, her success has elevated her ranking from No. 37 to No. 33 with a total of 1,416 points.

Aiming for Wimbledon Seeding

Looking ahead, Eala has her sights set on earning a seed for Wimbledon, scheduled from June 29 to July 12. The seeding cutoff is set for June 22, and only the top 32 players will receive a seed. Achieving this status is crucial for Eala, as it means she would face lower-ranked players in the initial rounds, allowing her a better chance to progress through the tournament.

As Eala continues to rise in the rankings, she is not only focused on her immediate matches but also on positioning herself among the elite players in tennis. Her journey is one to watch as she progresses through the upcoming competitions.
