Rights Group Reports Drone Strike Killing 11 in Central Sudan Market

A drone strike in central Sudan’s Abu Zaeima market has resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and left many others injured, according to a report from local rights group Emergency Lawyers. This incident occurs amid escalating aerial attacks that contribute to a worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.

Details of the Drone Strike

On Saturday, the market in Abu Zaeima, a town under paramilitary control in North Kordofan state, was targeted. Emergency Lawyers documented the attack, which adds to the increasing violence since combat began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

  • Date of Attack: June 6, 2026
  • Location: Abu Zaeima, North Kordofan, Sudan
  • Casualties: At least 11 dead, dozens injured

The organization suggested that the death toll may rise but did not identify the perpetrators of the drone strike. Neither the army nor the RSF has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Context of Escalating Violence

The drone strike is part of a broader trend of violence. Less than 24 hours prior, similar aerial assaults targeted nearby villages and a civilian vehicle. Emergency Lawyers condemned the strike, highlighting a troubling pattern of strikes against civilians and public spaces.

The organization emphasized that the continuous attacks signify a profound disregard for human life and the essential tenets of international humanitarian law. They called for an immediate cessation of such attacks and accountability for those responsible.

Further Instances of Violence

On the same day as the drone strike in Abu Zaeima, another drone reportedly hit a fuel station in el-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan. Witnesses noted that four civilians were wounded and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

A recent escalation of violence has included nearly 70 fatalities from two drone strikes in the past week across North and West Kordofan. The United Nations reported a staggering 880 civilian deaths from drone strikes nationwide between January and April 2026.

Humanitarian Crisis Overview

The conflict in Sudan, particularly in the Kordofan and Blue Nile regions, has intensified significantly. This region holds strategic importance, linking RSF strongholds to areas controlled by the Sudanese army.

  • Displacement: Over 300,000 people have fled frontline areas since last year.
  • Conflict Duration: Entering its fourth year, with tens of thousands of fatalities.
  • Current Crisis: Nearly 13 million individuals displaced, with widespread hunger and humanitarian needs.

As the war continues, Sudan faces one of the largest humanitarian crises globally, with immediate action required to protect civilians and restore stability. The situation demands urgent international attention to prevent further loss of life and support those affected by this turmoil.
