Canadian Man Relocates to India: Costs Lower, Lost 14lbs in 5 Months

A Canadian man recently relocated to Bengaluru, India, and has shared insights from his first five months living there with his wife’s family. This new journey has presented challenges, but he has also identified several rewarding aspects of his new life.

Challenges of Relocating to India

Despite their intentions, the couple has encountered difficulties, particularly with establishing basic services. The man faced significant hurdles in opening a bank account due to his foreign status. He discovered that the process required various documents, including an Aadhaar card and a Permanent Account Number (PAN), which are often required for residents in India.

He noted that international bank cards are not widely accepted, and cash transactions have been difficult, as many vendors do not have change. As a result, his wife often covers their expenses during outings.

Daily Life and Adaptation

In addition to banking issues, the Canadian expat expressed dissatisfaction with product authenticity in India, citing concerns about knockoffs. Language barriers further complicate daily interactions, and he has yet to build a social network in his new city.

Prior to their move, both he and his wife left their jobs, which has allowed them some flexibility. They have organized activities such as walks in Cubbon Park and rock climbing gatherings, helping to integrate into the community.

Positive Aspects of Relocation

Despite these challenges, the man has acknowledged many advantages to living in Bengaluru. The cost of living is significantly lower than in Toronto, and he appreciates the vibrant startup culture present in the city. He stated, “Even with all of this, I still think we made the right call. Our runway is way longer here.”

He also mentioned that hiring household help has eased daily burdens, allowing him more time to explore personal interests. He has particularly enjoyed the local cuisine, admiring dishes like ghee pudi masala dosa for their quality and affordability. Remarkably, he has lost 14 pounds since relocating.

Settling into a New Lifestyle

The man has begun to adjust to his new lifestyle, finding a rhythm that suits him. He enjoys the flexibility of his day-to-day activities without the stress of traditional work environments. “No commute. No committee saying no to every idea,” he noted. He finds great satisfaction in being able to design his schedule, which has contributed to his personal well-being.

Future Considerations

While he feels positively about their decision to move, he recognizes some ongoing concerns. Factors such as air quality and traffic remain significant considerations for long-term plans, especially if they decide to start a family. Nevertheless, his experience thus far has been a mixture of frustration and reward, reflecting the complexities of adapting to a new culture.
