Disney Revives Tangled Live-Action with Scarlett Johansson in Talks to Star

Disney is reviving its live-action adaptation of “Tangled,” a project that faced a temporary halt earlier this year. The studio is in discussions with Scarlett Johansson to play the role of Mother Gothel. The initial pause occurred in April, closely following the underwhelming performance of the live-action “Snow White” release.

Box Office Insights

Despite the setback, Disney experienced a significant resurgence with its recent remake of “Lilo & Stitch,” which grossed over $1 billion globally. This success highlighted a vital distinction between the two projects: cultural relevance. While “Snow White” has lost its appeal among modern audiences since its original release in 1937, “Lilo & Stitch” has remained popular since its debut in 2002.

In 2024, “Lilo & Stitch” also helped generate over $2.6 billion in retail sales, showcasing its lasting impact. This impressive performance indicates that Disney anticipates a similar reaction for “Tangled,” particularly among younger viewers.

About “Tangled”

  • Oscar-nominated song: “When Will My Life Begin”
  • Spin-offs include:
    • 2012 short film: “Tangled Ever After”
    • 2017 TV series: “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure”

Production Team

Michael Gracey, known for directing “The Greatest Showman,” is in negotiations to helm the remake. The screenplay will be crafted by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, recognized for her work on Sony’s reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” As of now, further casting details have yet to be revealed.

Disney seems poised to capture the imagination of a new generation with the live-action “Tangled,” hoping to replicate the success seen with “Lilo & Stitch.”
