Concerns Mount Over Shropshire’s Major Rally Route

The Hills Ford Stages Rally is scheduled to occur across Shropshire in September. However, concerns have surfaced regarding its implications, especially after its relocation from Herefordshire. Former councillor Peter Phillips from Bishops Castle has expressed his disapproval of the event, deeming it “inappropriate” and questioning the transparency of the organizers.

Concerns Over Shropshire’s Major Rally Route

The announced route covers parts of south-west Shropshire, including notable areas such as Shelve, The Bog, and Linley Woods, located near the Stiperstones and within the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. Phillips worries the rally could impede farming operations and potentially harm the local ecosystem. He has mentioned the possibility of road damage and significant disruption for residents and local businesses.

Community Response and Official Consultation

Stuart Anderson, MP for South Shropshire, has re-iterated his communication with local residents who oppose the rally. He has conveyed these concerns to both the organizers and Shropshire Council. Anderson confirmed that the organizers are adhering to the legal framework under the Road Traffic Act as the proposal is currently under review by the Council.

Organizer’s Statement and Community Outreach

In response to the backlash, rally organizers claim to have met all legal obligations, collaborating with Shropshire Council and Shrewsbury Town Council since August 2025. A safety plan is in place, emphasizing that public knowledge of the complete route is restricted to ensure safety and prevent copycat incidents.

  • Over 250 residents, farms, and businesses along the rally route were contacted.
  • Most feedback received has been supportive, with only five complaints logged so far.

The organizers affirmed that the rally will not utilize off-road land or damage the landscape. Any necessary repairs to roads and verges will be managed appropriately. This rally is expected to attract many tourists, projecting an economic boost exceeding £500,000 for Shropshire, as articulated by a spokesperson.

Previous Rally Issues in Herefordshire

It’s important to note that Cheltenham Motor Club previously canceled the 2025 rally intended for Ledbury, citing challenges in securing required orders from Herefordshire Council. Following a freedom of information request, twenty-six issues were identified that residents had raised. These included:

  • Lack of route information
  • Concerns over road closures and traffic
  • Noise disruptions
  • Insufficient welfare facilities
  • Potential damage to roads
  • Impact on local businesses
  • Access restrictions for farms
  • Fear of aggressive driving behavior

As discussions continue, the future of the Hills Ford Stages Rally in Shropshire remains a topic of significant concern for many stakeholders in the community.
