National Trust for Scotland Names New Conservation and Policy Director

The National Trust for Scotland has appointed Anne McCall as its new Conservation and Policy Director. She will officially assume her role on August 24, 2023.

Background of Anne McCall

Anne McCall hails from Dumfries and Galloway and has an extensive background in conservation. She previously served as Director of RSPB Scotland since 2017. In this position, she established a nationwide peatland restoration program and played a critical role in significant conservation efforts, including:

  • Cairngorms Connect
  • Orkney Native Wildlife Project

Additionally, she chaired the judging panel for the Nature of Scotland Awards, showcasing her dedication to advancing wildlife conservation.

Responsibilities at National Trust for Scotland

In her new capacity, McCall will manage all national conservation functions within the organization. Her responsibilities will include:

  • Buildings conservation
  • Nature conservation
  • Collections services
  • Gardens and designed landscapes
  • Archaeology
  • Policy and environment
  • Risk management

Support from Leadership

Phil Long OBE, Chief Executive of the National Trust for Scotland, expressed his enthusiasm for McCall’s appointment. He stated, “The National Trust for Scotland has one of the biggest and broadest conservation remits in Scotland. We are delighted to have found a candidate in Anne who matches our needs in skills and experience.”

Succession

Anne McCall succeeds Stuart Brooks, who unfortunately passed away in December 2025. Her arrival marks a new chapter for the National Trust for Scotland as it continues its commitment to conservation and policy development.
