Teen Killed, Another Critical After NYC Bridge Subway Surfing: Police

A tragic incident occurred in New York City involving two teenagers who were subway surfing. On Friday, a 14-year-old boy lost his life while another 18-year-old male sustained critical injuries after they fell from the top of a subway train on the Williamsburg Bridge.

Details of the Incident

Authorities reported that the incident took place as the teens were riding on top of the J train. They fell as the train crossed the Williamsburg Bridge heading towards Manhattan. The 14-year-old fell from the bridge into a lot located near Delancey Street and Lewis Street, while the 18-year-old fell onto the subway tracks.

Immediate Aftermath

Both teens were immediately rushed to Bellevue Hospital. Sadly, the younger victim was pronounced dead upon arrival. The older teenager remained in critical condition as of Saturday.

Rising Concerns About Subway Surfing

New York City Transit officials have expressed growing alarm over the increase in subway surfing incidents. In 2022 alone, there were 928 reports of individuals riding outside trains. This is a significant rise from the 490 reports compiled in 2019.

Subway Surfing Fatalities

  • Five fatalities linked to subway surfing were reported last year.
  • So far this year, there has been one subway surfing-related fatality as of May 23.

Community Reactions

Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the event as “a preventable tragedy.” He emphasized that no family should face such heartbreaking news, adding that subway surfing poses genuine dangers.

Demetrius Crichlow, the President of NYC Transit, echoed the mayor’s concerns. He stated that it is incomprehensible that these dangerous stunts continue to occur, especially given the risks involved. Crichlow has urged parents, teachers, and community members to intervene and discourage teens from engaging in these hazardous activities.

Efforts to Combat Subway Surfing

The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has been actively working to reduce subway surfing through various initiatives. These include:

  • Public service announcements and media campaigns.
  • Outreach efforts to raise awareness.
  • Call for quicker removal of related social media content.

As subway surfing continues to pose significant risks, the community is urged to work together to prevent further tragedies.
