Toronto Storm Cleanup Begins After 672 Emergency Incidents

Following a severe rainstorm that impacted the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), emergency crews and Toronto Hydro officials have begun cleanup operations. This major weather event occurred on Saturday, resulting in significant disruptions across the city.
Impact of the Storm
The storm unleashed heavy rainfall, accumulating between 30 and 50 millimeters. In light of this, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the region. The aftermath caused a dramatic increase in emergency incidents.
Emergency Incidents Reported
- Toronto Fire officials reported 672 emergency incidents within 24 hours following the storm.
- This figure represents a 36% increase in overall call volumes compared to normal levels.
Power Restoration Efforts
Toronto Hydro is actively working to restore electricity to various neighborhoods. They reported responding to over 145 power-related events, primarily due to downed powerlines and trees making contact with wires.
Ongoing Challenges
Officials stated, “We’re continuing to respond to scattered outages throughout the city due to yesterday’s high winds.” While many outages have been addressed, some remain unresolved. Priority is being given to incidents involving police, fire, and ambulance services.
Public Safety Measures
Residents are urged to maintain a safe distance of at least 10 meters from downed power lines. Any downed lines should be reported directly to Toronto Hydro at 416-542-8000.
Cultural Impact of the Storm
The storm’s severity also led to the postponement of a concert by Bruno Mars at the Rogers Stadium. The artist announced he rescheduled the event for the 31st, stating, “I never want this but I need everyone to be safe in order to have a good time. I’ll make it up to you Toronto.”
As cleanup efforts continue, residents are encouraged to stay informed and report any ongoing issues to the appropriate authorities.
