Boya and Duerksen Receive Penalties After Montreal Sprint Race

The FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race in Montreal ended with significant consequences for two drivers. Both Mari Boya and Joshua Duerksen received penalties after the race concluded.

Boya Handed Time Penalty

Mari Boya was penalized with a 10-second time penalty for driving too slowly near the detection zone. This action led to a collision involving three cars during the race.

Details of the Incident

The race stewards reviewed data and consulted with Boya and a PREMA Racing team representative. They determined that Boya, driving Car 12, slowed excessively at the exit of Turn 10. This caused Nico Varrone, in Car 22, to back off. However, Cian Shields, who was in Car 21, couldn’t react in time, resulting in a nose-to-tail contact with Varrone. Consequently, Varrone collided with Sebastián Montoya.

As a result of this incident, Boya finished the race in 15th place.

Duerksen Faces Grid Penalty

Joshua Duerksen, competing for Invicta Racing, received a three-place grid drop following the Montreal race. Initially, he was given a five-second time penalty for causing a collision at the race’s start.

Retirement Impact

Unfortunately for Duerksen, he retired before he could serve the penalty. The stewards then deemed it necessary to implement a three-place grid drop for the next race in which he participates.

  • Driver: Mari Boya
  • Team: PREMA Racing
  • Time Penalty: 10 seconds
  • Final Classification Position: 15th
  • Driver: Joshua Duerksen
  • Team: Invicta Racing
  • Initial Penalty: 5 seconds for collision
  • Final Penalty: 3-place grid drop

Both penalties highlight the importance of maintaining awareness and control on the track, particularly in critical race situations.
