Mhambrey Defends Chahar Amid Catching Mishaps

Mumbai Indians (MI) faced elimination from the IPL 2026 playoffs on May 8, following their disappointing loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). With only four matches remaining in the league stage, MI’s morale has been challenged. However, assistant coach Paras Mhambrey remains focused on motivating his players.

Focus on Improvement Despite Setbacks

Mhambrey emphasized the team’s commitment to playing “quality 40 overs of cricket.” After MI’s ninth loss in 13 matches, he stated, “Our preparation is simple: look at winning the games.” He underscored the importance of learning from each game to enhance team performance moving forward.

The team’s catching, particularly involving Deepak Chahar, has faced scrutiny this season. Chahar was involved in two critical missed catches during the match against KKR. In the 10th over, a top-edged pull from Rovman Powell fell between Chahar and his teammate Robin Minz, both converging on the ball yet unable to secure it. This unfortunate incident raised questions about MI’s catching abilities.

Deepak Chahar’s Catching Challenges

Later, in the 18th over, Chahar attempted to catch a scoop from Tejasvi Dahiya. As Ryan Rickelton pursued the ball from behind the stumps, Chahar also rushed in from deep fine-leg. Despite the lack of communication, Rickelton successfully caught the ball, while Chahar landed awkwardly. Mhambrey defended Chahar, stating, “No one does it on purpose. You drop catches. It just happens, part of the game.”

MI’s Catching Statistics

Despite these hiccups, the MI squad is not the worst in the league when it comes to catching. According to ESPNcricinfo, MI has dropped a total of 14 catches this season, ranking them as the fourth-most efficient catching team among league participants.

Looking Ahead

As the season approaches its conclusion, MI returns to Wankhede Stadium for a crucial match against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Mhambrey is optimistic about the upcoming game. He stated, “We need to find a way to win. It’s like a home game for us.” With their familiarity with the surface, MI aims to finish the season on a positive note.
