Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Shreyas Iyer, Holds Punjab Kings Accountable for 5 Losses

The Punjab Kings are in a precarious position following their fifth consecutive defeat in the IPL 2026 season. Currently fourth on the points table, the team needs to secure victories in their final two matches to have any chance of advancing to the playoffs. Their latest setback occurred against the Mumbai Indians, where they squandered a match they had seemed to control for most of the time.

Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Shreyas Iyer and Punjab Kings

Sunil Gavaskar, a former Indian cricket legend, strongly criticized the Punjab Kings’ performance in the recent game. He expressed disbelief at Mumbai’s ability to score 53 runs in the final three overs. Gavaskar attributed the outcome partly to the batting failure of Punjab’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, suggesting the team could have reached a higher score had he batted longer.

Concerns Over Bowling and Tactical Decisions

Gavaskar also raised concerns about the bowling strategy. He questioned Iyer’s decision not to give the new ball to Bartlett, despite the pitch conditions appearing favorable. “This was a game Punjab Kings should have won,” he stated during an analysis on Star Sports’ ‘Amul Cricket Live’.

Player Performance and Team Strategy

A standout performance during the match came from Azmatullah Omarzai, who excelled both with bat and ball. Gavaskar noted that Punjab should consider him for future matches, alongside Marcus Stoinis, to strengthen their batting lineup.

Former Indian player Sanjay Bangar echoed Gavaskar’s views. He pointed out that Iyer’s choice to rely on only five bowlers limited the team’s options against Mumbai’s aggressive batting. “Shreyas Iyer used only five bowlers, and that allowed Mumbai to target Bartlett effectively,” Bangar explained.

Mumbai’s Remarkable Chase

Mumbai’s Tilak Varma played a pivotal role in the match. His ability to carry the team forward and attain about 150 runs in the last 12 overs was crucial. Despite some low strike-rate innings from other players, Varma kept the chase alive, leading to a dramatic finish.

Path Ahead for Punjab Kings

  • Punjab Kings must win their next two matches to qualify for the playoffs.
  • Improving on their bowling strategy is essential for future success.
  • Key players like Iyer and Omarzai need to perform to give the team a fighting chance.

As the season progresses, Punjab Kings will need to regroup and adapt their strategies if they want to turn their fortunes around in this IPL 2026 campaign.
