N.L. Extends Power Purchase Deal with Hydro, Corner Brook Mill to 2027

The government of Newfoundland and Labrador has officially extended its power purchasing agreement with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper. This agreement, which will remain in effect for an additional 12 months, gives the mill time to finalize its diversification strategy.
Details of the Extended Agreement
The updated contract will now last until the end of June 2027. The extension aims to provide stability as the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper mill evaluates its future, particularly regarding its modernization plans. Forestry Minister Pleaman Forsey emphasized the importance of allowing the mill to conduct thorough assessments of its operations.
- New Agreement Duration: Until June 2027
- Power Purchase Volume: Approximately 280,000 megawatts
- Cost per Kilowatt Hour: Around 18 cents
Background of Corner Brook Pulp and Paper
The Corner Brook Pulp and Paper mill has been a cornerstone of the community since 1925, employing approximately 400 workers. The mill’s operations have had a significant impact on the local economy.
Recently, only one paper machine has been operational. This situation follows a major shutdown that occurred last fall, with the mill reopening last February. Kruger, the mill’s owner for over 40 years, is currently developing a $700-million diversification initiative aimed at transitioning away from the declining newsprint market.
Future Plans and Economic Impact
Kruger is expected to unveil its diversification plans publicly in the near future. The strategy will likely focus on modernizing operations, enhancing efficiency, and potentially transforming the mill into a long-term electricity provider.
Minister Forsey expressed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting the forestry sector, recognizing Corner Brook Pulp and Paper’s vital role in it. He noted that maintaining employment opportunities in the region remains a top priority.
As the situation develops, stakeholders and the local community await further announcements from Kruger regarding its strategic plans and the future of the mill.
