Official reports indicate that the strike caused the deaths of 21 individuals, with an additional 42 sustaining injuries. Among the survivors is Olga Kovaleva, a 21-year-old who was trapped under the rubble but successfully rescued.

Russian Responses and Accusations

Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the incident, labeling it a “terrorist strike.” He emphasized that there were no military facilities in the vicinity, asserting that Russia’s air defense systems were not involved. Putin stated, “Therefore, there is absolutely no basis for claiming that the munitions struck the building.”

In the wake of the attack, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces confirmed their military operation in the area on the night of 21-22 May, claiming it targeted a Russian military unit. This claim has sparked further accusations and diplomatic tension.

Faced with the aftermath of the strike, Russia requested an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council. Vasily Nebenyza, Russia’s UN ambassador, characterized the strike as a war crime, presenting images of the damaged dormitory to support his claim.
