Treliving on Maple Leafs’ Season: Rielly Still Has Much to Offer

In a recent interview, former Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving addressed the team’s disappointing season, marking their first missed postseason since 2016. Speaking on TSN’s OverDrive, Treliving suggested that the team struggled with “buy-in” from players and cited various factors affecting performance.
Treliving’s Insights on Team Dynamics
Treliving, who was dismissed from his position earlier this season, analyzed the factors contributing to the Maple Leafs’ poor outcomes. He acknowledged injuries but dismissed them as an excuse, stating, “Everybody goes through injuries.” He pointed out a lack of buy-in and indicated that even victories did not reflect the team’s actual performance level.
“That was the biggest challenge for me,” he remarked. He noted that despite winning some games, the team did not control play or maintain an advantageous shot share.
Coaching Changes and Team Management
The Maple Leafs recently appointed John Chayka as the new general manager, following the dismissal of head coach Craig Berube. Treliving expressed sadness over Berube’s departure, describing him as a close friend and asserting that they were aligned in their management approach.
“It’s tough to see those changes,” he noted, recognizing the challenges faced during a difficult season.
Looking Ahead: Morgan Rielly’s Future
Amidst rumors of a roster overhaul, defenceman Morgan Rielly has emerged as a key focus. Last season, Rielly recorded 11 goals and 36 points in 78 games, averaging over 21 minutes of ice time. However, his performance was criticized after finishing with a minus-18 rating.
- Key Stats:
- Goals: 11
- Points: 36
- Games Played: 78
- Average Ice Time: 21:08
- Final Plus/Minus: -18
Treliving defended Rielly, stating, “I still think there is a lot of game there.” He emphasized Rielly’s experience and sense of responsibility toward the team. The veteran defenceman holds a full no-move clause, complicating potential trade discussions.
Rielly’s Contract and Career Highlights
Rielly is under contract for eight years, worth $60 million, with an annual cap hit of $7.5 million. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent by the end of the 2029-30 season. The 6-foot-1 defenseman was drafted fifth overall by the Maple Leafs in 2012 and has recorded 98 goals and 549 points in 951 career games.
Throughout his time with the Maple Leafs, Rielly contributed to nine consecutive playoff appearances and secured two division titles, although the team faltered this past season.
As the Maple Leafs look to the future under Chayka, Treliving’s comments suggest that both change and continuity will play crucial roles in shaping the team’s next steps.
