170,000 Ride REM on West Island Branch’s Opening Weekend

The recent opening of the Anse-à-l’Orme branch was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. According to the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), more than 170,000 riders used the new stations over the opening weekend. This significant turnout underscores the demand for better transit options in the area.

Opening Weekend Highlights

The Anse-à-l’Orme branch features four new stations located on West Island, just off Highway 40. Access to these stations was free for the entire weekend, allowing many to experience the new transit line.

Community Engagement

  • Visitors received special passports for stamp collection at each station.
  • Participants were given paper train models as souvenirs of their visit.
  • Free rides were offered on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In a heartfelt message on social media, REM expressed gratitude, stating, “We were happy to meet people passionate about transit, curious young people, and REM regulars.” This was the first major rapid transit initiative aimed at serving the West Island community.

Future Fare Structure

Now that the opening weekend has passed, standard fare collection has begun. The fees align with costs associated with other modes of transit in the same zone. For detailed pricing information, prospective riders can visit the ARTM’s website.

The gathering of over 170,000 riders not only highlights the branch’s immediate success but also reflects a growing interest in improved public transportation options throughout the region.
