Dodgers Acquire Pitcher Eric Lauer

The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to acquire left-handed pitcher Eric Lauer from the Toronto Blue Jays. This move comes after the Blue Jays designated Lauer for assignment recently.
Details of the Acquisition
According to reports from The Athletic’s Katie Woo, Lauer’s status on the waiver wire remained unclear. Initially, it was suggested that Lauer had the option to sign with the Dodgers after clearing waivers. However, an updated report indicated that negotiations between the Dodgers and Blue Jays were ongoing, hinting at a possible minor trade.
Due to Lauer’s over five years of MLB service time, he could reject an outright assignment while still keeping what remains of his contract. Lauer is owed approximately $3.2 million out of his $4.4 million salary. The Dodgers will only be responsible for the prorated minimum salary, with the remaining $3.2 million being covered by the Blue Jays.
Lauer’s Career Overview
Eric Lauer has experience as a starter and swingman, having played for the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers between 2018 and 2022. However, his career faced challenges following a difficult 2023 season. Notably, Lauer did not make any Major League appearances in 2024, spending time in the minors with the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates. He also played in the KBO League for the Kia Tigers.
In the 2024 offseason, Toronto signed Lauer to a minor league contract. He emerged as a crucial contributor during the Blue Jays’ run to the American League title. Lauer was initially utilized as a long reliever before transitioning into a starting role by June. He later returned to his bullpen duties in September and throughout the postseason.
