Polestar 6 Revival: Launch Still Possible

The Polestar 6 project, an electric convertible, remains active despite a shift in priorities for the Swedish-Chinese automotive brand. Polestar is concentrating on volume models that promise better financial returns. Graeme Lambert, the global head of product communications, indicated that substantial development work has already been completed for the Polestar 6.
About the Polestar 6 Electric Convertible
Initially revealed in 2022, the Polestar 6 is a high-end, electric 2+2 convertible. It is built on the Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA) platform, which was also utilized for the Polestar 5 sedan. While the Polestar 5 has already moved into production, the Polestar 6 was sidelined as part of a strategic pivot aimed at prioritizing the upcoming Polestar 7 small SUV and the next-generation Polestar 2 sedan.
Development Progress
The development team for both models consists of engineers formerly associated with brands like Volvo, Lotus, Aston Martin, and McLaren. They focused on creating exotic and innovative designs using a bonded aluminum chassis, distinct from any existing Geely Group platforms. Before the closure of its UK R&D center, Polestar had made significant advancements in the Polestar 6 project. This included advanced prototyping, which was highlighted by a demonstration drive at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Key Features and Remaining Tasks
- The Polestar 6 shares many components with the Polestar 5, including motors and suspension systems.
- Many similarities exist in the front half of the cabin design between the two models.
- Outstanding tasks include finalizing the design of the rear seats and the complex hardtop roof mechanism.
Despite the R&D center’s closure, Lambert expressed confidence in the company’s capability to complete the remaining tasks. The expertise necessary to finalize the project still resides within the team in Sweden.
Market Considerations
While the Polestar 6 is positioned to compete as a rival to cars like the electric Porsche 911 Cabriolet, its production depends greatly on the commercial success of Polestar’s more affordable models. Lambert emphasized that achieving the desired sales volumes, cutting costs, and improving profit margins is crucial before moving forward with Polestar 6.
The future of the Polestar 6 as a flagship model is tightly linked to the success of the Polestar 7 and the next-generation Polestar 2. Lambert noted, “The key for us is to deliver [the 7 and 2] correctly and to drive the business forward effectively.”
