Winnipeg Welcomes First Uniqlo as Shoppers Queue Early

Winnipeg welcomed its first Uniqlo store on Friday, creating excitement among shoppers eager to explore the popular Japanese brand. The grand opening at Polo Park mall attracted hundreds of visitors who queued early to experience the launch.

The event kicked off at 10 a.m. with several attractions, including:

Mayor Scott Gillingham attended the opening in Uniqlo apparel and celebrated the addition of the store. He announced that the new location has already employed 65 individuals, with more positions expected to open as the store settles in.

Uniqlo, headquartered in Tokyo, operates more than 2,500 stores worldwide since its inception in 1984. In Canada, the brand currently has 37 locations, with the first store opening in Toronto in 2016. The Polo Park store spans over 18,000 square feet and features the retailer’s Lifewear lineup, seasonal collaborations, and a range of graphic T-shirts.

Retailer Impact on Winnipeg

The addition of Uniqlo is seen as a positive reinforcement for the city’s retail landscape. Peter Havens, the general manager of Polo Park, noted that the store’s presence could attract other major retailers to Winnipeg. Retail analyst Bruce Winder highlighted Uniqlo’s appeal to Gen Z shoppers, who appreciate affordable yet durable clothing options.

Uniqlo is keen on connecting with the local community. Marketing manager Whitney Martyniuk explained that the brand sought feedback from residents to determine which local businesses should partner for the grand opening. This approach reflects Uniqlo’s strategy to appeal to local tastes as it expands within Canada.

Future Plans

Uniqlo plans to continue its growth in Winnipeg by opening a second location at St. Vital Centre by the end of the year. The enthusiastic response at the Polo Park store indicates promising prospects for the retailer in the Canadian market.
