Waskesiu Prepares for Snowy May Long Weekend
Waskesiu Lake, located within Prince Albert National Park (PANP), is preparing for an unusual May long weekend this year. Typically, this weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, attracting numerous visitors. However, recent snowfall has impacted activities, keeping many lake-goers away from the beach.
Waskesiu’s Unique May Long Weekend
Erin Barber, who has visited Waskesiu for over 20 years and operates the Happy Campers Bar & Grill, noted a significant drop in visitors. “There’s probably one-twentieth of the people that would normally be here this time of year,” she stated. Some cabins remain without running water, limiting the number of guests.
Visitor Experience
Despite the weather, some visitors chose to come to Waskesiu, either to enjoy their days off or to work on their properties. While most campgrounds in PANP remained open, occupancy was below 50 percent. Sandy Lake campground was closed, while Namekus Lake was reportedly nearly underwater.
- Snow Cover: Snow blankets much of the grass and trails in town.
- Wildlife Sightings: A herd of eight to ten elk was observed near the tennis courts.
Community Reactions
For some families, snow does not deter their long weekend plans. One family expressed their commitment: “We always spend May long weekend at the lake, so snow or sunshine we were making the trip.” Janice Fagnou, owner of Outter Limits store for 31 years, reported that this is the first time she has had to shovel her store’s entrance during this holiday.
“It’s pretty abnormal,” Fagnou remarked, acknowledging the quieter atmosphere but highlighting the adventurous spirit of those present. “The people that are here are up for the adventure, and it’s beautiful here no matter what.”
Weather Outlook
According to Environment Canada, temperatures in the Waskesiu Lake area will remain cool, with lows in the single digits throughout the week. However, daytime highs are expected to rise, reaching 20°C on Friday and Saturday.
