Chargers’ Rookie RB Omarion Hampton Placed on IR Due to Ankle Injury

The Los Angeles Chargers have announced that rookie running back Omarion Hampton has been placed on injured reserve due to an ankle injury. Coach Jim Harbaugh stated on Monday that Hampton will be sidelined for at least four games, making him ineligible to return until Week 10. This matchup will be against the Pittsburgh Steelers on a Sunday night.

Details of the Injury

Hampton suffered the injury during the third quarter of the Chargers’ recent 27-10 loss to the Washington Commanders. The incident occurred on a fourth down play when quarterback Justin Herbert rolled right while Hampton sprinted into the flat. He tripped over Washington linebacker Frankie Luvu’s foot, resulting in significant discomfort.

Recovery Timeline

According to Harbaugh, Hampton is expected to miss a minimum of four games. His swift return will depend on recovery progress. The details regarding the severity of the ankle injury remain undisclosed.

Hampton’s Performance Before Injury

Drafted as the No. 22 overall pick, Hampton was beginning to justify his selection. In the previous weeks, he showcased his potential with impressive performances. Notably, during a Week 4 game against the Giants, he rushed for a career-high 128 yards on just 12 carries, including a 54-yard touchdown run. From Week 3 to Week 5, he accumulated 17 receptions for 122 yards.

Challenges for the Chargers’ Rushing Attack

The Chargers are now facing a significant setback in their backfield. After Najee Harris suffered an Achilles injury in Week 3, they depended heavily on Hampton. Both players are currently on injured reserve, leading to a lack of depth in the running back position.

Next Steps for the Rushing Game

  • Hassan Haskins will step up as the primary running back. He has recorded 195 career rushing yards with an average of 3.0 yards per carry.
  • Kimani Vidal and Amar Johnson, both on the practice squad, will also be potential options for the Chargers. Vidal has been elevated to the active roster recently and recorded 18 rushing yards against the Commanders.

Injuries Affecting the Entire Roster

The Chargers are dealing with a particularly challenging injury season. They have not only lost their top two running backs but are also without key offensive linemen. Rashawn Slater is out for the season due to a knee injury, while Joe Alt was unable to participate in the last game due to a high ankle sprain. Starting right guard Mekhi Becton has struggled with injuries, recently sustaining a hand injury that limited his participation.

Facing Adversity

Defensive leader Khalil Mack has also been sidelined since Week 2 due to an elbow injury and is on IR, with plans to return no earlier than Week 7. Harbaugh emphasized the importance of resilience during this challenging period. He stated, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and I just look at it as an opportunity.”
