Norwegian Cruise Line Employee Falls Overboard in Tragic Incident

A tragic incident occurred on the Norwegian Breakaway as a cruise line employee fell overboard early Sunday morning. The ship was returning to Boston after a week-long journey to the Bermuda Islands. The incident was reported approximately 20 kilometers off Cape Cod.
Details of the Incident
According to passenger Rebecca Durandisse, she was in her cabin when she heard loud noises and noticed lights flashing. “It breaks my heart,” she shared in an interview with CBS News.
During the early hours of Sunday, the crew activated an emergency response to assist a fellow crew member who had reportedly been seen falling from the ship on security cameras.
Search Operations
- First helicopter arrived at 1:15 AM to aid in rescue efforts.
- Provincetown Coast Guard team joined the search operations.
- The search operation lasted throughout the morning.
The crew focused entirely on the search before safely resuming their trip to Boston. A letter was distributed to passengers informing them of potential delays. A second helicopter took off later in the morning to continue searching.
Investigation and Response
The search efforts were ultimately suspended around noon as authorities awaited new information regarding the incident. Unfortunately, the employee has not yet been located. The cause of the fall remains unclear, and the identity of the crew member has not been disclosed.
In a statement to CBS News, the cruise line emphasized, “The safety and well-being of our crew is our highest priority. Our thoughts are with the family of the crew member during this difficult time.”
