Bruce Dickinson on Creating Iconic Albums in a Quiet Jersey Hotel

Bruce Dickinson, the renowned vocalist of Iron Maiden, reminisced about the band’s creative process in Jersey. This picturesque location played a pivotal role in the making of three of their most celebrated albums: Piece of Mind (1983), Powerslave (1984), and Somewhere in Time (1986).

Creativity in a Quiet Jersey Hotel

During an interview with ITV News, Dickinson shared how the band and their crew rented an entire hotel during winter months in the Channel Islands. He stated, “It was cheaper to come here and rent a whole hotel out of season.” This arrangement not only provided boarding but also a 24-hour bar, which became a hub for brainstorming.

A Memorable Movie Night

One notable evening, the band watched the 1981 horror film Omen III: The Final Conflict. This experience had a significant impact on their songwriting. The film concluded with a quote from the Bible that struck a chord with the band, leading them to brainstorm ideas for Piece of Mind.

  • The quote referenced was from the Book of Revelations, discussing themes of pain and suffering.
  • The phrase “Pain… brain!” emerged, reflecting on the album’s title and its cover art.
  • This creative discussion took place at the Mermaid pub, where the band enjoyed beers while bouncing ideas around.

Supporting Charity Initiatives

Recently, Dickinson returned to Jersey for the charity challenge called South-North Adventures. This initiative, founded by Kevin Dutton, encourages resilience in young people by engaging them in activities from the southernmost to the northernmost points of the British Isles. Proceeds benefit organizations such as Heavy Metal Truants and Bikeability.

Upcoming Plans with Iron Maiden

Looking ahead, Iron Maiden is preparing for the next leg of their Run For Your Lives world tour, set to begin next month. The band is set to tour the Americas, Asia, and Australia for the remainder of the year.

Documentary and Hall of Fame Induction

A new documentary titled Burning Ambition will be released on May 7, highlighting the band’s storied career. Furthermore, Iron Maiden is scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November, although the current members will miss the ceremony due to their touring schedule.

New Music and Collaborations

This year, Dickinson completed recording his upcoming solo album, a follow-up to 2024’s The Mandrake Project. The album features contributions from members of Brazilian metal band Sepultura and was recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 in California. Dickinson, along with band members Steve Harris and Adrian Smith, will discuss the band’s legacy in the upcoming issue of Classic Rock, available on April 29.
