Spain, Mexico, and Brazil Urge Respectful Dialogue with Cuba

Spain, Mexico, and Brazil have raised alarms regarding the severe situation in Cuba. On Saturday, they emphasized the need for “sincere and respectful dialogue” with the Cuban government, noting an ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting the Cuban population.

Joint Statement on Cuba’s Humanitarian Crisis

In a recent statement issued by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these nations voiced significant concerns about the hardships faced by Cubans. They stressed the importance of implementing necessary measures to alleviate the dire conditions on the island.

Calls for International Respect

  • Spain, Mexico, and Brazil urged the international community to avoid actions that worsen living conditions in Cuba.
  • The countries highlighted the need for adherence to international law in all discussions regarding Cuba.
  • They advocated for a sustainable solution that allows the Cuban people to freely determine their own future.

This urgent appeal coincides with a leftist summit in Barcelona attended by notable leaders, including Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The summit is hosted by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Impact of U.S. Policies on Cuba

The United States has a long-standing opposition to the Cuban government since the communist regime’s rise in 1959. In January, the U.S. tightened its economic pressure on Cuba by blocking all hydrocarbon supplies, following the ousting of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro, Cuba’s primary ally.

This blockade has intensified Cuba’s existing economic and energy crises, further complicating the situation for its 9.6 million inhabitants.
