Trinidad and Tobago Police Discover 56 Bodies, Mostly Children, in Cemetery

Authorities in Trinidad and Tobago have uncovered a chilling scene in the town of Cumuto. A total of 56 bodies, primarily those of children, were found abandoned in a cemetery, prompting an investigation into potential unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses.
Details of the Discovery
On a recent Saturday, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) announced the grim finding. The collection of bodies included:
- 50 infants
- Four adult males
- Two adult females
Several of the adult bodies showed signs that they had undergone post-mortem examinations. Identification tags were found on the adults, similar to those used in morgues. Police officials stated, “Preliminary indications suggest that this may be a case involving the unlawful disposal of unclaimed corpses.”
Forensic Examination Underway
Following the remains’ discovery, the Cumuto police promptly secured the area and initiated a forensic examination. Specialized units, including homicide experts, have been deployed to assist with the investigation. Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro expressed the deep concern regarding this discovery, acknowledging its emotional impact on families and the wider community.
Legal and Social Implications
The improper disposal of human remains is a criminal offense in Trinidad and Tobago. The nation has faced rising challenges with organized crime in recent years, leading to the declaration of a state of emergency in December 2024. This declaration was initially meant to combat gang violence but has persisted, with extensions occurring regularly.
Government Response to Crime
In March, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar disclosed that during the emergency period, 373 individuals had been detained. The government has emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward crime and organized gangs. “I will do everything legally possible to terrorize criminals and those who aid and abet them,” she stated.
Rising Homicide Rates
Trinidad and Tobago has also recorded increasing homicide rates since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The statistics reveal a jump from approximately 20 homicides per 100,000 people in 2020 to a staggering rate of 45.7 in 2024. However, reports indicate a decline in 2025, with the rate decreasing to around 27 per 100,000.
The investigation into the disturbing discovery of 56 bodies continues, with the TTPS remaining committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring that justice prevails in this deeply troubling matter.
