Kate Nash Honors Sinéad O’Connor with Reimagined ‘Famine’ Tribute

Kate Nash has released a new version of Sinéad O’Connor’s 1994 track “Famine,” featured on the album “Universal Mother.” This rendition pays tribute to O’Connor while addressing historical narratives surrounding the Great Hunger.

Nash’s interpretation incorporates an original verse, complemented by the tin whistle. This instrument holds personal significance for Nash, as it was the first she learned to play. The track serves as a poignant reminder of the historical ties between Ireland and England.

The Inspiration Behind “Famine”

The impetus for Nash’s take arose after O’Connor’s passing in 2023. With increasing nationalism in the UK and worldwide, Nash describes her release as an “invitation to interrogate our histories both personal and national.” She noted the phrase that inspired her: “The English can’t remember history, while the Irish can’t forget it.” Nash remarked on her lack of education about An Gorta Mór, the Irish famine.

The Importance of Acknowledging History

Nash highlighted the need for England to recognize its historical actions for true healing and understanding. She stated, “Education is a crucial step towards peace.” Nash credits O’Connor with shaping her artistry, acknowledging the impact of O’Connor’s perspective on her work. “I would not be the artist I am today without Sinéad’s bravery and sensitivity,” she added.

Musical Significance of the Tin Whistle

The inclusion of the tin whistle in Nash’s tribute adds a layer of depth. She learned the tune during her early education, calling it “a nice sort of symmetry.” This element retraces her musical roots while commemorating a critical moment in Irish history.

Accompanying Video and Visual Elements

An accompanying video, co-directed by Nash, showcases artist and activist Tia O’Donnell. O’Donnell’s installation features the phrase “The English Don’t Know Their History,” embroidered on a quilt displayed at various locations, including outside Parliament.

Upcoming Performances

In addition to her music release, Nash made an appearance earlier this year on the seventh series of “The Masked Singer.” She has several live performances scheduled, including:

  • MAY 1: Liverpool Sound City, Liverpool, UK
  • MAY 3: Liverpool Sound City, Liverpool, UK
  • MAY 23: Bearded Theory, UK
  • JULY 22: Galway International Arts Festival, Galway, Ireland

Nash’s tribute to Sinéad O’Connor serves as a call to recognize and reflect on shared histories, resonating deeply in today’s sociopolitical climate.
