Preventative Measures Being Taken
In a bid to reduce the risk of spreading meningitis, UKHSA is expanding its provision of antibiotics and vaccinations. This initiative will roll out in stages, starting with Budmouth Academy and Wey Valley schools.
- Single-dose antibiotics will be administered.
- A vaccination program will follow shortly.
- Pupils from other schools and eligible children in Weymouth will receive invitations post-weekend.
Parents or guardians must accompany youths under 16 to provide necessary consent for these health interventions.
Signs and Symptoms of Meningitis
Dr. Smout urges vigilance regarding the signs and symptoms associated with meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia, which may include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Rapid breathing
- Drowsiness
- Shivering
- Vomiting
- Cold hands and feet
Additionally, septicaemia may present with a rash that does not fade when pressure is applied. If any symptoms arise, seeking immediate medical attention is crucial, as the disease can progress quickly.
