Desjardins Credit Card Changes Concern Customers

Recent changes to Desjardins credit cards have raised concerns among customers regarding potential abuse. Effective June 10, cardholders who share a credit card account will no longer have equal rights. One partner will become the primary cardholder, while the other will be designated as an additional cardholder with limited privileges.
Customer Reactions to Credit Card Changes
Sarah Milis was caught off guard when she opened her mail last week. In just two months, her shared credit card will be managed entirely by her partner. “It shook me to read this,” she expressed, still in disbelief. While she trusts her husband completely, she is alarmed by what she considers a regression in equality. “It’s an injustice,” she lamented.
Impact of Primary Cardholder Designation
As the primary cardholder, her husband will oversee the account. He will have access to all transactions and will be solely responsible for any debt incurred. Although Milis can still use the card, her visibility is restricted. She will only be able to see her own transaction history on the AccèsD app unless her husband grants her permission to view joint transactions.
Concerns Over Potential Abuse
Johanne Leblanc, a budgeting advisor at Options consommateurs, highlighted possible abuse scenarios arising from this new structure. “The first thing that comes to mind with this change is the potential for misuse, particularly regarding information control,” she noted. For instance, during disputes, an additional cardholder could run up significant expenses, leaving the primary cardholder responsible for repayments.
Unilateral Changes in Financial Tools
Leblanc believes that couples who chose this credit card as a financial management tool now face a significant change that they did not agree to. “This shift has an impact on how couples manage their finances,” she observed. Notably, customers cannot change the designation of cardholders; Desjardins will determine it based on the initial application details.
Desjardins’ Stance
Jean-Benoît Turcotti, a spokesperson for Desjardins, explained that the designation of primary and additional cardholders is linked to the original credit card request. “The first name listed on this request becomes the primary cardholder,” he clarified. Customers facing unique situations are encouraged to contact Desjardins for possible solutions.
Recommendations for Affected Customers
In light of these changes, Johanne Leblanc advises couples to consider drafting a debt-sharing agreement, similar to a cohabitation contract for those living together but not married. Meanwhile, Sarah Milis and her husband are contemplating switching to a different credit product. “If Desjardins proceeds with this change, we will need to shop elsewhere,” she said.
