Recent polls among Formula 1 fans have shown a significant preference for Christian Horner as the ideal candidate for Audi’s newly vacant team principal role. Following the unexpected departure of Jonathan Wheatley early in the 2026 season, over 80% of supporters expressed strong backing for Horner to step in.

The wave of support for Horner comes as Audi faces challenges within its F1 project. Wheatley was initially brought in to oversee the brand’s transition from Sauber, making his exit all the more surprising.
Juan Pablo Montoya, a former F1 driver, has been vocal in advocating for Horner’s appointment. He praised Horner’s extensive experience and success, stating, “People underestimate what Christian has done… he can deliver results.”
Horner’s Success at Red Bull
Christian Horner has an impressive track record, having led Red Bull Racing for 21 seasons. Under his management, the team secured:

Current Challenges for Audi
Despite the enthusiasm among fans, the likelihood of Horner taking over appears slim. Mattia Binotto, currently serving as the Head of the Audi F1 Project, has taken on Wheatley’s responsibilities. This decision signals Audi’s preference for internal solutions over seeking an external candidate.
After the Japanese Grand Prix, Binotto stated that Audi would not actively look for a new team principal, mentioning the need for additional support staff instead. Montoya has raised concerns about this arrangement, claiming that Binotto is “under a lot of pressure” and may not be entirely committed to the role.
Logistical Considerations and Competing Interests
There are logistical challenges as well. Should Horner be considered, he would need to move to Switzerland, where Audi’s chassis operations are located in Hinwil. This presents an obstacle, as Horner did not relocate during his time with Red Bull.
Additionally, Horner has been rumored to seek ownership in Alpine and is also linked to Aston Martin, where a managerial shift is anticipated. These factors could divert his focus away from Audi.
