Dodgers Sideline Mookie Betts, Recall Hyeseong Kim to Roster

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a significant move by placing star shortstop Mookie Betts on the injured list due to a right oblique strain. This decision comes after Betts left Saturday’s game against the Washington Nationals, where the Dodgers secured a 10-5 victory. Team Manager Dave Roberts indicated that the potential injury occurred during a check swing earlier in the game.
Mookie Betts’ Condition and Recovery Outlook
Although Roberts was cautious about providing a precise timeline for Betts’ recovery, he expressed hope for a quicker return than the typical 4-to-6 weeks projected for such injuries. “He’s actually in better spirits,” Roberts noted. Despite his disappointment, Betts reportedly feels better than expected, having dealt with similar issues in the past.
- Betts’ Performance: He has a batting average of .179 in the first eight games of the season.
- Last Season Stats: Betts had a strong showing with a .258 average, 20 home runs, and 82 RBIs over 150 games.
Hyeseong Kim’s Promotion
In a strategic move, the Dodgers recalled Hyeseong Kim from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Kim had a promising rookie season, batting .280 with three home runs and 17 RBIs in 71 games. With Betts sidelined, Kim is expected to share shortstop duties with Miguel Rojas. Rojas replaced Betts during the Saturday game and is set to bat second in Sunday’s lineup against the Nationals.
Upcoming Series and Lineup Changes
The Dodgers will conclude their series in Washington before heading to Toronto for a three-game matchup with the Blue Jays starting Monday. This series will present challenges as the Dodgers adjust their lineup without Betts, who has consistently batted third throughout the current season.
Manager Roberts acknowledged the impact of losing a player like Betts but emphasized the team’s depth. “It certainly changes things,” he remarked, “but it also offers opportunities for others to step up.” The Dodgers now face the task of reconfiguring their roster to adapt to Betts’ absence while aiming for continued success on the field.
