TenneT and National Grid Forge Partnership for LionLink Offshore Wind Interconnector

Transmission system operators TenneT and National Grid Ventures (NGV) have entered into a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to advance the LionLink project. This ambitious initiative aims to establish a hybrid interconnector connecting the UK and the Netherlands through a future offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea.

TenneT and National Grid: Pioneering the LionLink Offshore Interconnector

The JDA outlines the collaborative framework for the partners as they work towards a final investment decision (FID). Key aspects include procurement, governance, and planning strategies that will promote transparency concerning project costs prior to construction.

Project Overview

  • Project Name: LionLink
  • Countries Involved: United Kingdom, Netherlands
  • Offshore Wind Farm: Nederwiek 3
  • Expected Capacity: Up to 2 GW
  • Households Powered: Approximately 2.5 million
  • Operational Timeline: Early 2030s

The LionLink interconnector will facilitate cross-border electricity flow, harnessing offshore wind-generated power. By connecting the energy grids of the two nations, the project is designed to maximize offshore wind usage and enhance system flexibility while minimizing the need for extensive offshore infrastructure.

Timeline of Key Events

  • April 2023: LionLink was officially launched, marking the start of the partnership between the Netherlands and the UK.
  • 2026: Anticipated application for the Development Consent Order (DCO) with the UK’s Planning Inspectorate.
  • 2027: Expected decision on the DCO.

In addition to progressing LionLink, the companies already operate the BritNed interconnector, which has recently celebrated 15 years of functionality. This 1 GW subsea link has facilitated nearly 93 TWh of electricity trade between Great Britain and the Netherlands since it began operations in 2011. On an annual basis, BritNed has generated enough electricity to power about 1.4 million households.

Impact on the Energy Sector

The establishment of LionLink is a significant step towards enhancing energy collaboration between the UK and the Netherlands. As both countries work towards their energy stability and sustainability goals, the successful implementation of LionLink will not only bolster their commitment to offshore wind energy but will also play a crucial role in their respective energy systems.

Overall, TenneT and National Grid’s partnership on the LionLink project underscores a shared vision for advancing offshore renewable energy solutions to meet increasing energy demands efficiently.
