Calgary May Lift Water Restrictions Thursday

Calgary residents may have a reprieve from water restrictions as early as Thursday. City officials confirmed that repairs to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main are complete. An official update from the city is anticipated soon.

Repair Progress and Water Usage

On Tuesday, Mayor Jeromy Farkas announced the successful refilling of the pipe. Pumps have been activated to restore water flow. However, officials caution that this does not guarantee Calgary has completely resolved its water issues. The re-pressurization process is considered the most critical stage of the repairs.

  • Daily water usage on Wednesday reached 503 million liters.
  • This volume placed Calgary in the ‘red’ zone after a recent period of lower consumption.
  • Stage 4 water restrictions were implemented on March 9, affecting residents for the third time in two years.

Impact of Water Restrictions

As part of the restrictions, residents must limit showers to three minutes. Furthermore, dishwashers and washing machines should only be used for full loads. These measures help reduce overall water consumption during repair efforts.

Future Repairs and Replacement Plans

Repair work was essential to maintain the aging feeder main. Meanwhile, city officials are working to expedite a new pipe construction project. The timeline for this replacement has been fast-tracked, with completion expected by the year’s end. Typically, such projects can take up to four years to complete.

Despite the current improvements, officials continue to advise caution. The risk of another break in the feeder main is still a concern, and residents should stay informed about any further updates. Testing conducted earlier this week confirms the water in the repaired pipe is safe for consumption.
