Carney Condemns Israel’s ‘Illegal Invasion’ as Lebanon Operation Expands

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada has condemned Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, labeling them as an “illegal invasion” that violates Lebanon’s territorial sovereignty. His remarks came during a news conference in Wakefield, Quebec, on Tuesday amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
Condemnation of Military Actions
Carney’s use of strong language marks a significant shift in Canada’s stance regarding the ongoing conflict. He reiterated the necessity of a ceasefire to alleviate the worsening situation as Israeli ground troops begin to advance further into Lebanese territory. “It’s a violation of their territorial sovereignty,” Carney stated.
Lebanon’s Response to Hezbollah
The Prime Minister highlighted that the Lebanese government has been taking steps against Hezbollah, a group accused of terrorism. He noted, “The government of Lebanon has banned Hezbollah and is trying to take action against their terrorist activities.” Carney’s remarks came at a time when hopes for peace seem increasingly distant.
Escalating Conflict
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensified after missile attacks were launched toward Israel on March 2. On March 16, Canada joined France, Germany, Italy, and the UK in urging Hezbollah to stop its attacks on civilians and disarm by the end of 2025. The urgency of the situation is underscored by the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Lebanese citizens due to ongoing military actions.
International Concern and United Nations Involvement
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs expressed deep concern over Carney’s strong statements. They emphasized Hezbollah’s status as a “terrorist proxy of the Iranian regime.” The UN Security Council has convened emergency sessions following the deaths of three UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon due to explosive attacks.
