ExxonMobil Launches Ninth Offshore Guyana Project with Haimara Gas Field

ExxonMobil is advancing its offshore operations in Guyana with the upcoming Haimara gas field project. This initiative marks a significant step for the company and the region, as the Haimara discovery will serve as the central element of this development in the southeast section of the Stabroek Block.
Overview of the Haimara Project
At a recent press conference, ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge discussed plans for this ambitious project. He emphasized that Haimara will act as an anchor for the development, similar to the Longtail discovery. This area will group together several gas-focused findings, enhancing the overall project viability.
Project Timeline and Regulatory Process
- Regulatory Phase: ExxonMobil is preparing to enter the regulatory phase, aiming to submit an application for environmental authorization to the EPA.
- Field Development Plan: The company anticipates presenting a field development plan within the next year.
- Investment Assessment: Routledge noted that confidence is growing as technical assessments progress, ensuring the project meets necessary investment thresholds.
Additional Discoveries and Development Plans
Several nearby discoveries, including Pluma, are expected to be integrated into the Haimara project. According to Routledge, Haimara will be the focal development point, facilitating the recovery of gas from surrounding resources. This strategy aims to optimize recovery while advancing the company’s operational capabilities.
Technical Aspects of the Project
The development will include a floating production facility located near Haimara, connected by subsea tiebacks to additional resources. This approach is designed to maximize recovery efficiency.
- Reservoir Insights: Pluma, despite being integral to the project, is characterized by lower liquid volumes compared to other discoveries.
- Dynamic Testing: Further testing is required to gather dynamic data on Pluma’s reservoir, which remains incomplete.
Strategic Importance of Gas Development in Guyana
The Government of Guyana is actively advocating for the development of gas resources, particularly near the Suriname border. Projects like Haimara and Pluma are crucial for local industrial growth, with plans to pipe gas to Berbice. This aligns with President Irfaan Ali’s vision of establishing Berbice as a new industrial hub.
As part of its broader energy strategy, Guyana is also working on the Gas-to-Energy project utilizing gas from the ExxonMobil-operated Liza field, with future phases planned around the Hammerhead development.
