Supermarket Giant to Temporarily Close 229 England Stores Next Week

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has announced the temporary closure of all 229 full line stores across England. This decision affects larger locations and falls on Easter Sunday, a significant occasion for many shoppers. The closures will last for 24 hours, allowing employees to enjoy the holiday.
Store Closures on Easter Sunday
During the Bank Holiday weekend, M&S will suspend operations in the majority of its English stores. Customers are urged to finalize their holiday shopping prior to the closure, which takes effect on Easter Sunday.
Operational Schedule
- Good Friday: Most M&S stores will operate under normal hours.
- Easter Saturday: Stores will maintain standard schedules.
- Easter Monday: Stores will resume trading with varying hours.
Specific opening times can be checked using M&S’s store locator or the M&S app. While the full line stores in England will close, convenience stores across the nation, along with all M&S locations in Scotland, will remain open.
Legal Obligations and Trading Regulations
Under UK law, shops larger than 280 square meters in England and Wales must close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. However, smaller stores have the option to open under certain trading restrictions. These regulations limit Sunday trading hours to six consecutive hours, typically from 10 am to 6 pm.
Other Supermarkets’ Easter Hours
M&S is not alone in adjusting its schedule for the Bank Holiday. Other major supermarkets have similar policies:
- Sainsbury’s: Most stores will close on Easter Sunday, with branches in Scotland remaining open.
- Tesco: All stores will close on Easter Sunday, except for larger Scottish stores.
- Easter Monday (April 6): Many large stores, including Sainsbury’s, are expected to operate from 8 am to 8 pm.
Shoppers are advised to check local store timings, especially for smaller Sainsbury’s Local and Tesco locations that may follow a different schedule. As the Easter weekend approaches, customers have ample opportunities to stock up on essentials and seasonal treats before these temporary closures take effect.
