£4000 Upgrade: Transform Your 2.3-Tonne EV into a Sports Car Experience

The super-saloon segment, traditionally led by German and Italian automakers, is now seeing competition from newer players like Polestar. This brand aims to redefine the segment by combining luxury with electric performance. Their strategy involves integrating a powerful electric motor in a sleek, high-end saloon vehicle. The Polestar 4, equipped with 536bhp and all-wheel drive, exemplifies this approach.
£4000 Upgrade: Transform Your 2.3-Tonne EV into a Sports Car Experience
Recently, I compared my standard Polestar 4 with a version outfitted with the Performance Pack. While both cars share the same power output, the Performance Pack enhances the driving characteristics without increasing horsepower.
Performance Pack Enhancements
- 22-inch wheels for improved handling.
- Stiffer ZF dampers for better suspension performance.
- Brembo brakes with 392mm front discs for superior stopping power.
- Gold seatbelts as a stylish addition.
The enhanced model also features a £900 body-colored lower cladding option, which enhances its saloon appearance, despite its classification as a hatchback. To evaluate their performance, both vehicles were tested on the Bicester Motion one-kilometre handling circuit.
Driving Experience
Diving into the performance of the Polestar 4 revealed its impressive acceleration. On the back straight of the circuit, measuring just 310 meters, I reached speeds exceeding 90 mph. The throttle response, even in range mode, remained highly responsive. This mode doesn’t compromise acceleration, allowing for a thrilling driving experience.
In Performance mode, the throttle responded with minimal pedal travel, providing immediate power when needed. However, I noted a lack of steering communication, which might not satisfy those seeking a dynamic driving experience. Understeer was apparent, even with the stability control set to Sport, limiting fun. Yet, the car’s grip levels excelled, making it forgiving in tight corners.
Noisy Circuit Testing
Interestingly, I encountered a unique situation on the circuit. The sound of the tires skidding approached the noise limits typically reserved for combustion engines. This phenomenon underlies the high grip levels and performance capabilities of this electric vehicle.
Ultimately, the Performance Pack adds notable improvements to the driving dynamics of the Polestar 4. Enhanced suspension and brake systems significantly reduce body roll, providing a sportier driving experience. While the power output remains unchanged, these upgrades can transform your 2.3-tonne EV into a formidable contender in the super-saloon class.
