Marie Keane, the beloved mother of famed Irish footballer Roy Keane, has passed away. She died under the care of medical staff at St. Anne’s Ward in Marymount University Hospital.
Life and Legacy of Marie Keane
Marie Keane is remembered as a dedicated mother to her children Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy, and Pat. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice “Mossie” Keane, and her brother Pat. Roy once described her as “the only boss I listen to,” reflecting the strong bond they shared.
The influence of both parents on Roy’s life and career was profound. Despite his tough exterior, he has often expressed deep affection for his family. He famously shed tears reminiscing about them during a segment on “Stick to Football” last year.
A Family Reunited
Maurice Keane passed away in August 2019 at age 79, after suffering a stroke in 2018. Marie and Mossie married in 1963 at the Church of the Resurrection in Farranree, Cork, and settled in Mayfield. They raised a close-knit family that included a future soccer legend.
Throughout his career in the UK with clubs like Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, Roy ensured that his parents were always present at his games. In the 1990s, they relocated to Rathpeacon, Co. Cork, to a house Roy had purchased for them, reflecting their strong family ties.
